WASHINGTON — The scene in the White House was eerily reminiscent of the movie “The Untouchables.” The only thing missing was the baseball bat. The threat-and-beg maneuver could fail and backfire, which could leave the president and his party in an even deeper hole. His job-approval rating is the lowest of any modern president at this point. “There is really no parallel in the modern era,” Jon Meacham, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian of the presidency, told me. The same applies within his own White House, where Trump gives free rein to his designated intimidation wing, led by Steve Bannon, to sow insecurity and division.
