Altman said he was in discussions with the ACLU before Trump's immigration orders and the subsequent influx of cash. He declined to say how much funding Y Combinator was giving the ACLU. In a written statement, ACLU executive director Anthony Romero said he was "thrilled" to have the help of Y Combinator. Typically, Y Combinator takes an equity stake in the companies it invests in, but that isn't the case with the ACLU arrangement and other nonprofit partnerships. Altman dismissed the possibility of other Y Combinator partners receiving help from the ACLU on immigration or other matters in the future.
