Huge numbers of migrants are heading south to winter in Africa, many slipping away at high altitude overnight. Ruddy Shelducks nest no closer than the Balkans and north west Africa, though 1,000 moulting on the Dutch coast each summer are a more likely source of birds seen in Britain. No-one is certain from where Ruddy Shelducks in the Netherlands originate, but there is a large feral population in Switzerland, so perhaps that’s where they’re from.
