It is something far less visible and far more strategic: where Africa’s Internet traffic is exchanged and who controls it. At the heart of the global Internet are Internet Exchanges, physical interconnection points where networks swap traffic directly. Most African Internet Exchanges operate within national borders. The majority of Africa’s Internet traffic is driven by global platforms in social media, streaming and cloud services. Internet exchanges are strategic infrastructureIXPs are no longer technical curiosities, they are economic multipliers.
