The number of COVID-19 infections in Africa surpassed the 2.49 million mark on Sunday as the continent continues to see a steady rise in its caseload. South Africa remains to be the hardest-hit country on the continent by the pandemic, having recorded 912,477 cases and 24,539 fatalities. The country accounts for 36.64 percent of Africa’s COVID-19 caseload and 41.76 percent of its deaths. South Africa’s caseload is more than twice as high as the second-highest caseload reported by Morocco. Other than the two, the only other African countries that have reported more than 100,000 COVID-19 infections are Egypt (124,891), Ethiopia (119,494) and Tunisia (119,151).
