Afghan interpreters fear being sent home to their fate under visa rules

Scores of Afghan interpreters who were given a new life in Britain after serving with UK forces in Afghanistan say that they have been left in limbo and let down by “shameful” Home Office rules. More than 150 interpreters have written to Sajid Javid, the home secretary, to appeal for a change in government policy after they were told that they must each pay almost £1,000 to be granted indefinite leave to remain. They say that anyone who cannot afford the visa fee risks being sent back to Afghanistan when a five-year permit expires. For some this could mean being forcibly returned to the country next year, where they believe that they would be killed by Taliban insurgents because of their ties to the UK.
