Aileen Crean O’Brien and her sons have been dragging tyres to build up the strength to drag a sled and kit on the their South Georgia Island exploit Don MacmonagleExactly 100 years ago, the Irish explorer Thomas Crean, from Annascaul in Co Kerry, traversed the snow-covered mountains of South Georgia Island, in a treacherous effort to summon help for his fellow expedition members, stranded more than 1,300km away. When all of the men were eventually saved, it appeared nothing short of a miracle. It was all the more remarkable for the fact that the expedition, led by Irishman Ernest Shackleton, had been aiming for Antarctica; they ended up within reach of South Georgia entirely by accident. Next month, Aileen Crean O’Brien, Tom Crean’s granddaughter, is going to South Georgia…
