In one corner is Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, the Nigerian president of the African Development Bank, who is seeking reappointment. Nepotism and the abuse of power are perennially vexing issues in the governance of African countries. On the other hand, nothing more incenses the African elite than that Africa is being dictated to by foreign powers. That the US government has been known—especially in the past three-plus years— for patronising diplomacy makes the case of neo-colonialism all the more convincing. Among other things, Adesina has argued that his alleged transgressions were either decisions within his purview or actions that were independent of his office.
