Adam Zagajewski, Poet of the Past’s Presence, Dies at 75

Mr. Zagajewski, who had been living in Krakow, went into exile in 1982 in Paris, where he gained international acclaim for works first published in Polish and later translated. (He was also fluent in English, French and German.) He taught at the University of Houston and the University of Chicago, wrote several collections of poems and essays, and returned to Krakow in 2002 with his wife, the actress and translator Maja Wodecka. It read in part:You’ve seen the refugees going nowhere, you’ve heard the executioners sing joyfully. You should praise the mutilated world.
