The latest Walking and Cycling Index for the Dublin Metropolitan Area shows that active travel is now embedded in everyday life, with 70pc of residents walking or “wheeling” with mobility aids at least five days a week and 25pc cycling at least once weekly. These journeys are helping to cut congestion and emissions across the capital, with walking, wheeling and cycling saving an estimated 97,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases annually, equivalent to 1.21 million flights from Dublin Airport to Heathrow. Despite these high participation levels, the NTA report highlights strong appetite among residents to do more active travel if infrastructure and safety improved. “The positive results we see from the 2025 Walking and Cycling Index reports are a clear indication of the importance of our investment in active travel,” junior transport minister Seán Canney said. Welcoming the findings, Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien said sustained government investment in active travel infrastructure in recent years is contributing to “increased levels of walking and cycling in urban areas”.
