In his Dec. 20 op-ed, “Bye-bye, Bannonism?,” David Von Drehle described Dean Acheson as “one of history’s great diplomats.” In January 1950, Acheson, then the secretary of state, in a speech to the National Press Club declared that Korea was beyond our perimeter of defense. This was an invitation to Communist North Korea to invade South Korea, and it did so later that year. Many of us who went to Korea were not fans of Acheson, believing that his remarks precipitated a war that might not have occurred had North Korea known that the United States would intervene.
