Accused Salman Rushdie Attacker Charged With Attempted Murder, Assault

Authorities said on Saturday they had charged the man accused of stabbing novelist Salman Rushdie at a lecture in southwestern New York on charges of attempted murder and assault.

Matter, 24, was being held without bail at the Chautauqua County Jail after pleading not guilty to second-degree murder and second-degree assault charges at an arraignment Saturday afternoon, according to the Chautauqua County District. Mr Matar's assault charges are suspected of attacking Henry Rees, who was preparing to speak with Mr Rushdie. Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt said he and law enforcement officials are working with New Jersey police to gather more evidence and identify the motive for the attack.
