OPINION: One of the research projects happening in my lab involves searching New Zealand fungi for new compounds that can kill antibiotic-resistant superbugs. Academic publishing isn’t like any other forms of publishing. That’s why I’m committed to publishing all our work open access, though finding money for APCs is a challenge. They analysed all articles published in 2017 where the corresponding author was from a New Zealand university, and found that just one in three were freely available at a likely cost of $2 million. The one that isn’t open access is from a collaboration with some surgeons looking at ways of making surgery safer.
