'Abusive' protesters halt roadworks designed to protect schoolchildren

“Abusive” protesters have halted work to install a speed bump designed to improve safety outside an Auckland school. A small group of protesters took to Surrey Crescent, outside Grey Lynn School, to shout at and threaten residents and workers on site, on Wednesday evening. “Apologies if you heard any disturbance on Wednesday night on Surrey Crescent regarding the works for the Grey Lynn Safe School Speeds project,” the note read. Surrey Crescent resident David Welch, whose children attend Grey Lynn School, was left feeling “really upset” after receiving verbal abuse from the protesters. Stewart Reynolds, chairman of Grey Lynn school board, said the school “thoroughly supports” the efforts of Auckland Transport to preserve the safety of local students.
