The canoe/kayak sprint events will be contested at the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. In London, Canada won three medals: van Koeverden (silver, K1-500 metres), Mark Oldershaw (bronze, C1-1,000 metres) and Mark de Jonge (bronze, K1-200 metres). In recent years, Sweden has made its presence felt with 15 gold medals and 30 overall. In kayak, medals are awarded in K1 (single), K2 (two-man) and K4 (four-man) over two distances: 200 and 1,000 metres. K1 specialist Adam van Koeverden is the most accomplished Canadian paddler, with four medals spread over three Olympic Games.
