Abortion clinics across the province now have an automatic 50-metre protest-free safe zone around them, as new legislation to protect patients and staff comes into effect. Hospitals, pharmacies and other health facilities may also begin applying for similar buffer zones of up to 150 metres — something Planned Parenthood Toronto says it will do immediately. “We have been actively involved in, and in support of the legislation,” said Sarah Hobbs-Blyth, executive director, adding she is pleased the changes have come about because they will improve women’s safety. In Ottawa — where protests have been a growing concern in recent months — Ontario Attorney General Yasir Naqvi announced the first day of enforcement of the rules, saying the law has gotten a very positive reaction. “It’s important we respect those rights.”
