Abe’s strong mandate: The Japanese PM can now actualise his vision of a dynamic Asian power

In snap polls in Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party-led coalition has secured a two-thirds majority in the lower house of parliament. Under Abe’s framework of ‘Proactive Contribution to Peace’ Japan seeks to promote a global security order that upholds international rules. Under Abe Japan seeks to engage more meaningfully with partner countries in Asia and Africa. This is particularly welcome for India where Prime Minister Narendra Modi shares a personal friendship with Abe – as exemplified by the latter’s recent trip to this country. With Abe obtaining a fresh mandate, India-Japan strategic ties can be elevated further through projects like the proposed Asia-Africa Growth Corridor.
