In a surprising move, AMD has reentered the mobile phone graphics market with a development and licensing contract with Samsung Electronics. For Samsung, this is a repudiation of the Arm Mali graphics IP that it has been using since 2014 – at least for the high end of its SoC products. Back when AMD sold the Imageon mobile graphics business to Qualcomm, building high-performance graphics for very low-power mobile SoCs required a unique and specialized architecture. Specifically mentioned in the press release is that the Samsung deal only includes markets that complement AMD’s own markets. Overall, this is a win-win deal for AMD, and Samsung– AMD gets a new revenue source, Samsung gets further product differentiation with competitors.
