According to Awami League sources, the sub-committee was formed to monitor media during the election campaign time frame, as well as to prevent spreading of fake news and propaganda against the party. Kashem Humayun told the Dhaka Tribune that social media is a very important medium to reach the people. “During the last 10 years that Awami League has been in power, anti-government forces have attempted to use social media to spread rumours and anti-government propaganda,” he said. A five-member anti-rumour team has already been formed under the sub-committee to monitor such propaganda, the party’s central working sub-committee member also said. Sources inside the party revealed that key leaders are highly optimistic about winning in the 11th general elections and also that social media will play an integral role to achieve that.
