Local sources said there had been a long-standing dispute between Golam Mohammad Badal, Balipara union parishad chairman and president of union unit Awami League, and Abdul Bari, a convener of union unit Jubo League, over establishing supremacy in the locality. Quoting locals, Maniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Trishal police station, said supporters of both groups equipped with lethal weapons attacked each other after an altercation around 1pm, triggering a clash that left Saiful Molla,40, dead on the spot.
