ADB approves $167m loan to improve Bangladesh’s gas production efficiency

The project will also boost gas transmission by building 181 kilometres of transmission pipeline from Chittagong to Bakhrabad southeast of Dhaka. The $453 million project is expected to be completed in late 2021. More than half of the natural gas produced is used to generate electricity in the country. Bangladesh’s domestic natural gas supplies cannot keep pace with soaring demand for energy, resulting in a rising dependence on oil and diesel-based power generation. With gas reserves depleting, the Government of Bangladesh is trying to meet the supply shortage by importing liquefied natural gas.
