More than twenty-five (25) vehicles were burnt beyond repairs as a result of the gas explosion after owners of the some of the vehicles abandoned them at the mercy of the fire and fled for the lives at the heat of the explosion. Preliminary reports suggest that a tanker caught fire at the gas-filling station while discharging triggering two explosions which killed 7 persons, while an official disclosed that 132 persons have been left with various burn injuries. The explosion began at a state-owned GOIL liquefied natural gas station and spread to a Total petrol station across the street, sending a giant fireball high into the night sky and forcing frightened residents including students of PRESEC to flee. The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has after the incident initiated various measure including the cylinder recirculation module to avert a recurrence in the country.
