So much depends on whether the dark clouds of COVID lift at all, allowing the sun of new hope to shine through. But I’m optimistic, and within that optimism is to be found my main hope for the new year: compassion. A single word, and so it may seem easy — but compassion is one of the most difficult and important aspects of the great human story. It’s happened before, one of the most recent and well-documented cases being the British domestic narrative during the Second World War. I want compassion to be the beating heart of a new year, with all of its terrifying and wonderful possibilities.
