Pictured of some of the Southland women's signatures on the original petition to Parliament. An amazing decision that New Zealand women were the first in the world to gain this privilege alongside men. But this significant event 125 years ago did not come without enormous effort, perseverance, and lobbying. Finally 13 petitions signed by 32,000 women were compiled in 1893. Whether these ladies were caught up in the momentum, or signed in the face of opposition, this massive petition was significant.
