People in the region were told to evacuate from low-lying areas and the Thames Coast Road was ripped apart after massive waves pounded the road. KELLY HODEL / STUFF Thames Coromandel district mayor Sandra Goudie say the Thames Coast Road is a lifeline which needs to be fixed. State Highway 25, also known as the Thames Coast Road, north of Thames was ripped apart after massive waves pounded the road. The country has been buffeted by weather extremes this summer and, despite a subtropical storm and two ex-tropical cyclones, it's been the hottest in history.
