A stately clifftop golf hotel without the lofty attitude

The Fairmont St Andrews was refurbished in 2017 and is a veritable show home of Scottish interior designA bizarre rumour hit the travel journalist forums last week: Boris Johnson, they said, was staying at the Fairmont St Andrews. The hotel, inevitably, denied all knowledge, but if my stay there this month was anything to go by, BoJo, Carrie and wee Wilf would have fitted right in. Built in 2001, two miles south of St Andrews, the 212-room resort looms in gloriously snooty isolation over its clifftop setting like some grand Gleneagles-on-sea. A long, stately driveway through the 520-acre grounds all but sniffs: “VIPs only.”There’s nothing snooty about the greeting inside, mind. Yes, the Fairmont is a large international chain, but there’s none of that whispered welcome you get sometimes from big chain hotels.
