A soggy capital shooting for the wettest December in memory

Bow down New Zealand – Wellington is shooting for the record books with what may be the wettest opening month of summer in many people's lifetimes. Now into the 14th day of summer, Wellington has recorded 173mm of rain compared to an average of 83mm in the entire month. To find the wettest December on record, we have to go back to 1939 when 386.6mm fell in all of December. The entire Decembers of 1939, 1976, 1928, 1966, and 2001 had more rain than Wellington had received so far this December. And while today and Wednesday were going to be wet, the rain was expected to then ease up.
