A rare lunar eclipse will be visible across NZ on Wednesday morning

New Zealand is in for a rare treat Wednesday morning with a lunar eclipse visible in the early morning sky across most of the country. Starting at 6.43am, the shadow of the Earth will begin to eclipse the Moon. Here's what you need to know about eclipsesMICHAEL PROBST/AP An aircraft passes the full moon as a lunar eclipse begins in Frankfurt, Germany, in January this year. The true maximum of the eclipse won't be until around 9.30am, but the Moon will be below the horizon and no longer visible by that point. It will be a penumbral eclipse, where the Moon passes through an outer part of the Earth's shadow, meaning the lunar body's brightness will appear to dim, but will not fully disappear.
