While women in Indian cities are overloaded with fancy options to buy sanitary pads, let's take a detour and visit the scenario in rural India. Reports reveal that a majority of women in the interiors of our country either don't have access to or cannot afford sanitary napkins even in today's day and age. According to United Nations, only 6 per cent of Indian women use sanitary napkins--which is a surprising figure to say the least. Awareness and availability are the two requisites for improving menstrual health in the country and Bedekar's initiative that provides sanitary napkins at Rs 2.50 might help a great deal in the direction. Shyam Sunder has also manufactured terracotta incinerators for disposing off soiled napkins, making it environment-friendly and also hygienic.
