I have to admit that it took me some time to figure out that the celery (stalk celery, that is) that is sold and consumed here in France (maybe in all of Europe) is a different variety of stalk celery. So, yes, it's "different" but works just fine in cooking. And "having every intention of learning the language" but then not doing so because she got too busy is just asking for failure. (Well, so is putting off learning the language until after you get here.) I used to think he was just being negative - but after a few years, I think he's right!
