A look at the 9th century African city that was buried under modern-day Mauritania

Koumbi Saleh or Kumbi Saleh was a ruined city at the site of modern-day southeast Mauritania. The Ghana Empire otherwise known as Awkar existed from 700 to 1240. There were two cemeteries which were evidence that habitation in the town occurred over a significant amount of time. The initial excavation of Koumbi occurred in 1914 to be proceeded with three excavations between 1949 to 1951, 1975 to 1976 and from 1980 to 1981. It was then incorporated into the Mali Empire.
