I was 40 years old when Apple Inc. announced — this week — that they will cease manufacturing the iPod Touch, the final version of their storied music player. But when I was 22, backpacking through Europe, the treasure I brought with me was a silver Sony Discman. Whenever one of us saw somebody wearing white earbuds — the ones that came with an iPod, then recently launched — we’d note it out loud, scoring one point. Farewell to the iPod Touch — as well as iPod Mini, Classic, Video, Nano and Shuffle. For four short decades, people owned portable devices whose sole purpose was to play music.
