A critical eye over the world of artWARWICK SMITH/STUFF A mural by artist Haser was covered up to make way for a Paul Dibble pop-up sculpture called The Garden. TE PAPA Mountain Stream, Otira Gorge, circa 1893, Christchurch, by Petrus van der Velden. I have been reading a book about the artist Van der Velden and it made me consider just how emotive the whole issue of art can be. Van der Velden was a Dutch artist of astonishing calibre who washed up on rural New Zealand shores. But in art, such a slight can, it seems, lead to an artist going across the world into the wilderness.
