He should have done it a week ago and everyone would have forgotten about it by now. Instead Boris Johnson finds himself, with a week until polling day, looking like (and I use this phrase only as one that he will understand) a big girl’s blouse. A chlorinated chicken. All the things that he accused Jeremy Corbyn of being, for running scared of facing the judgment of the people, and now the Tory leader is running scared of half an hour of being shouted at by Andrew Neil. Johnson’s refusal to appear on the BBC’s series of Leaders’ Interviews is entirely understandable on his part and yet utterly depressing to the rest of us.
