Weyni Mengesha’s Soulpepper production is thoroughly realized from a design perspective and features a barn-burning performance by Daren A. Herbert, one of the most exciting talents in GTA theatre. Herbert plays Lucius Jenkins, a convicted murderer kept in 23-hour lockdown on Rikers Island, who has found God in prison. As his actions indicate, Angel is deeply suspicious of organized religion but grasps at faith as his conditions worsen. He’s egged on by Lucius, a figure of spectacular ambiguity brilliantly written by Guirgis and equally brilliantly brought to life by Herbert.
