Tolbert, Jr., president of Liberia and a practicing Baptist minister, was the recipient of the 1974 Gold Medallion of the Society of “The Family of Man” of the Council of Churches of New York. The existence of basic conflicts, of poverty and unbearable misery still constitute a challenge to which the human family must now respond in a more genuine, personal and pragmatic manner. In the more spiritual context, therefore, the family of man truly reflects the nature of the Divine. Indeed there must be reflected in their day-to-day living, and not simply articulated in their verbose professions, unadulterated human love rendering them obligated, accountable keepers of one another. For truly as members with natural affinity, of the Family of Man, our eternal challenge is mankind.
