Author George Saunders knows the question of what happens after death can’t be deferred indefinitely. “We really are going to find out—it kind of sounds obvious, but we are,” he says. “Even if it’s nothing, that’s something.” In his long-awaited debut novel “Lincoln in the Bardo,” he offers an answer. The book, due out Feb. 14, is rooted in the death of Abraham Lincoln’s 11-year-old son Willie, inspired by a story Mr. Saunders heard from a relative more than 20 years ago when driving near Washington’s Oak Hill Cemetery....
