To help scientists study this important process, the Allen Institute for Cell Science has launched a new tool, the Integrated Mitotic Stem Cell, that visualizes what cell division - or mitosis - looks like in an average human stem cell. The Integrated Mitotic Stem Cell combines images of fifteen different cellular components to create a 3-D map of what a typical cell looks like in different stages of cell division. Studying the normal process of cell division will also help researchers to better understand what happens in situations where cell division is affected, such as cancer. Another challenge his team faced in developing the Integrated Mitotic Stem Cell was the use of colors. That leads to tools like the Integrated Mitotic Stem Cell tool, where you can see a cell in three dimensions, in different stages of cell division, and with fifteen different cell components at once.
