I’ll be at Pittsburgh, my interest piqued by David Allen’s superb essay in praise of that orchestra. ZACHARY WOOLFEWhen the crowdfunding platform PledgeMusic announced its bankruptcy earlier this month, artists who were expecting payment for already completed campaigns found out that they might not ever see any money. In the classical world, the largest of these deficits may well be at Tzadik, the essential independent record label founded by the composer-saxophonist John Zorn and Kazunori Sugiyama. According to Mr. Zorn, about $200,000, the upfront production cost of a new 11-disc set of his music, years in the making. A limited run of vinyl-reissue releases is up and running to help earn back the lost funds.
