Among those excited about the results of Nolan Arenado’s contract extension with the Rockies was undoubtedly Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant. Manny Machado’s 10-year, $300 million contract with the Padres has ripple effects that will surely carry over into Bryant’s negotiations with the Cubs when the time comes. The Cubs would be wise to do the same with Bryant, but that might be difficult. In their way is the reality that the core of the Cubs offense is all set to hit free agency in close succession. And despite Cubs team chairman Tom Ricketts claiming there’s no money left, Bryant isn’t buying it.
