Clematis 'Wisley': There are smaller-flowered spring types of clematis but for summer stunners you need either large-flowered hybrids which perform in early summer and repeat again just before autumn or the viticella types which tend to have smaller flowers but in abundance for a long stretch over summer. Place them behind lower shrubs and flowers so in summer when their leaves tend to drop off, they don't look so shabby as they repeat flower.
