East-West Metro’s tunnel boring machine is set to start its final journey towards the Hooghly from Howrah station on Tuesday, and cover a distance of about 1,000m to emerge on the Calcutta side. The machine drilling the Calcutta-bound tunnel is now 280m from the river. After crossing that distance, it will have to negotiate another 747m through the river bed. Railway officials said although the distance between the two banks is 520m, the tunnel will cover an additional 200-odd metres because it will be going down a slanting path, from 27m to 40m, before climbing up again on the Calcutta side. Metro captures the machine’s 1km journey and timeline.
