Dave Poyner has been surfing for about 65 years and is set to compete in the Duke Festival of Surfing. Now, the 73-year-old Southshore resident is set to compete in this week’s Duke Festival of Surfing in New Brighton for the third time. Said Poyner: “An Australian friend of mine and myself, we were up there [Kaikōura] and we did an article [in New Zealand Surfing Magazine]. The Duke Festival of Surfing started on Tuesday and will run until Sunday. The festival is a celebration of surfing culture based around the surfing life of Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku, who popularised surfing, and visited New Brighton in 1915.
