MahaGenCo, however, is now losing its share fast to private players and the Centre, which offers power at a much cheaper rate. The company's critical situation started a year ago as the government's long term contracts with private power generation companies started realising. Activists have been demanding since long for the state's power distribution company Mahavitaran to stop buying power from MahaGenCo. A top MahaGenCo official said, "Four units of Parli power plant have been shut due to water shortage. Other eight units, including all four units in Bhusawal, have been shut down due to lack of demand."
