6-month moratorium on construction in Boracay to start in June

BORACAY ISLAND, AKLAN—A six-month moratorium on building construction on Boracay Island will be implemented starting in June this year amid the crackdown on violations of environmental laws and regulations. The moratorium will be implemented by municipal government of Malay in Aklan where Boracay Island is regulated. The moratorium is among the six-month implementing plan presented by Malay Mayor Ciceron Cawaling during a special stakeholders meeting held at the Eco-Village convention center here. ADVERTISEMENTThe meeting was attended by around 700 residents including expatriates, business and property owners in one of the biggest community meeting held here. The unregulated construction of hotels, resorts and other establishments is among those being blamed for the environmental and other problems of the island.
