50,000 new cancer cases a year

more-inAs many as 50,000 new cancer cases are detected in the State every year, as per the registry at the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) here. The number of cancer cases in the State exceeds the national average. In the government sector, cancer treatment was earlier available at RCC here, Malabar Cancer Centre, five government medical colleges, and General Hospital in Ernakulam. To address the shortage of cancer experts in the Health Department, doctors were given expert training at the RCC and one district cancer care unit was started in each district. They have now succeeded in finding 1,900 cancer cases, and provided chemotherapy and other care to nearly 31,000 people.
