On receiving information, a team of firefighters rushed to Khilafatghat in the Kamrangirchar area around 12:44 pm and evacuated residents from the building, said Dana Mia, operator of Fire Service and Civil Defence Control room. Residents of four more adjacent buildings were also evacuated. Shahin Fakir, officer-in-charge of Kamrangirchar police station, said the five-story building was constructed six months ago and one Samad Mia had purchased it from its previous owner, Shaheen, in January. The fire fighting team said the building was built without proper piling work.
