400 opium poppy plants recovered from Bogra nurseries

Members of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) have recovered about 400 opium poppy plants from three nurseries in Bogra Sadar upazila. DNC Inspector Shahjalal Khan said team of the DNC, on a tip-off, had launched a drive in Gokul area under the upazila and recovered the opium poppy plants from three nurseries on Sunday afternoon. DNC Deputy Director Dilara Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune that the plants seized from the nurseries were about one month old, whereas it requires five-six months old plants with fruits to get the resin that can be used to produce heroine. “Charges were not brought against the nursery owners because they grew the opium poppy as flower plants. The seized plants were destroyed by the narcotics officials.
