4-day workweek for gov’t workers, flexi-sked for private firms eyed

MANILA, Philippines – The government is considering proposals for a four-day workweek and other flexible work arrangements for government employees in order to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said the government is also studying other measures to prevent job losses as the private sector copes with the economic impact of COVID-19. The Cabinet secretary is a member of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases that is tackling the COVID-19 threat head-on. As for the private sector, Nograles said the Department of Labor and Employment recently issued an advisory regulating flexi-work arrangement in private firms. Because it’s temporary we don’t need to retrench or fire workers,” he said.
