In July 2012, owing to growing unrest between workers and the management of Maruti, protests turned violent leading to arson that claimed the life of a factory manager. A total of 148 workers were accused of rioting, conspiracy to commit murder and arson, Bloomberg reported. Lawyer Rebecca John, who represented the workers, confirmed that 117 of the 148 accused have been acquitted of all charges.
